The Passion in Slow Travel Tours

Posted by Bill Steiner – Adventures in Italy

I wanted to follow up on Kathy and Charley’s post last week about the Slow Travel Tours retreat we did two weeks ago.

One of the things that struck Kristi and me about the retreat was the wonderful people who were there, the passion they bring to the trips they lead, the integrity with which they operate, and the common vision for what we believe makes for enjoyable, rewarding travel.  Let me recount some of what we reaffirmed to each other about our trips and how they are similar even though we do different things in different places.

  • We each manage and lead trips ourselves so that our travelers benefit from the years of experience and connections only we can provide.
  • It is important to have lots of great local connections, so we can put our travelers in touch with the local community in a way that is impossible to do as an individual traveler or in typical large groups tours.
  • We keep our groups small because it provides an intimate experience, is personal, and more fun.
  • Before we lead a trip anywhere we first develop personal experience there so we can bring the unique qualities of that place to light.
  • We insist on staying in one place longer – most of us stay for a week – because it is only by slowing down that we begin to see, experience, and appreciate the nuance of places that make them interesting, fun, and informative. Ironically, we see more by seeing less.
  • We believe in providing a deep, rich cultural experience – our trips are, in many ways, cultural exchanges.

In reaffirming what we believe in we also committed to each other that we would continue to lead this kind of trip, and any other companies we select to join Slow Travel Tours will have the same commitments. It means that any one who signs up for a trip from a Slow Travel Tours member will be guaranteed an authentic experience in an authentic place with authentic people. Kristi and I feel lucky to have such a great group of people with whom we share a passion for slow travel.

KBortaKristi and Bill Steiner began leading “learning vacations” to Orvieto, Italy in 2003. Through Adventures in Italy they provide a cultural immersion experience. Many trips include the pursuit of some kind of creative work that complements and reinforces exploration of Italy’s culture. Relationships built over the years enable Kristi and Bill to provide experiences that a typical visitor to Orvieto never gets. Trips are held in May and September/October every year. Their Discover Orvieto and Girlfriend Getaway trips are available to groups any time of the year. Learn more about Kristi and Bill’s trips.
